This lesson pack supports young people  to understand how to keep themselves safe around roads and railways. Pupils explore potential hazards, identify risks and develop the skills to make safe decisions while travelling and as they develop independence.

Why teach about road and rail safety?
5,164 children were killed or seriously injured on England’s roads between 2018 and 2020. And during 2020-2021, there were 3,942 incidents on the railways involving children and young people. For both road and rail safety, the risk of injury is higher for those living in deprived areas.

Many of the key travel milestones (e.g. walking to school, travelling without adult supervision) take place during primary school, so PSHE education plays an important role in incident prevention for this age group — supporting pupils to learn the necessary knowledge and skills to assess risk and keep themselves safe in these contexts.
