The concept of ‘identity’ and more specifically ‘personal identity’ is crucial to helping pupils develop their own self-worth and appreciation of others. These two lessons (one for KS1 and another for KS2) help pupils explore the physical and abstract aspects of identity, supporting them to learn about the range of factors that contribute to personal identity and develop the skills to recognise positive aspects of their own identity.
At key stage 1 pupils start to explore the concept of identity. They focus on learning that although people are similar, everyone is individual, with their own set of character traits and features that are unique to them. Pupils reflect on their own and others’ individuality and develop a sense of self-worth, by celebrating their personal qualities.
The key stage 2 lesson builds on the previous learning about identity and individuality. Pupils discuss the different factors that can contribute to someone’s personal identity and ways that people can choose to express their identity and individuality.
