What makes our lesson plans different?

Not all PSHE lesson plans are created equal. Here’s what sets us apart.

PSHE-RGB-MONO

With a seemingly endless choice of PSHE/RSHE lesson plans now available, all promising the moon on a stick, it can be difficult for PSHE leads to know where to start when it comes to selecting resources.

Not only that, but there are various avenues available including comprehensive but often rigid set schemes, standalone free lesson plans (that often vary in quality) and AI lesson planners that might work well for Physics but can leave much to be desired when it comes to ensuring PSHE quality and accuracy.

As the official subject association and charity for PSHE education, in your corner since 2006, we put a lot of care and attention into creating our lesson plans.

From working with leading experts and using up-to-date evidence, to road testing the lesson plans in real classrooms and finessing the design — we don’t put our name to anything that doesn’t meet our rigorously high standards. The same applies to the lessons from other providers we award our Quality Mark to.

We put the hours in because we believe that you shouldn’t have to settle for anything less, and neither should your pupils. PSHE education is simply just too important to us.

Our approach blends an insistence on quality and ease of use with a respect for teacher professionalism, expertise and creativity. Each lesson plan is crafted with care and accompanied by guidance on how you can make it work for your pupils, in your school.

We aim for full PSHE education curriculum coverage, including all aspects of statutory RSHE as well as financial and careers education. And with over 120 lesson packs (containing over 400 individual lessons) to choose from on our website, PSHE Association members can afford to be discerning.

Here’s what sets our lessons apart.

Enhanced by experts. Backed by evidence.

Before even putting pen to paper, our Subject Specialists research lesson topics thoroughly and work with relevant experts to scope the content. This vital — and often overlooked — step ensures that your pupils benefit from accurate, up-to-date and evidence-based information, whatever the topic.

This is especially important for sensitive topics, including those relating to relationships and sex education or mental health, where inaccurate, poorly researched or poorly pitched lessons have the potential to do more harm than good.

Here are just some of the high-profile experts and organisations we’ve had the privilege of working with recently:

Our Subject Specialists are ideally placed to translate all of this research, experience and expertise into practical and engaging PSHE lesson plans that you can pick up and use in the classroom. Between them, they’ve taught and led the subject in just about every context you can think of, in a range of schools and school types across the country.

Put simply, what they don’t know about PSHE education isn’t worth knowing.

When you use one of our lesson plans, you can rest assured that it’s fully aligned with all aspects of PSHE education pedagogy and best practice, including safeguarding, statutory RSHE requirements and schools’ other statutory duties.

Pupil-centred and teacher-friendly design

We work with an expert design agency to ensure our pupil-facing resources are engaging, accessible, and representative of different types of bodies, ethnicities and backgrounds.

PSHEA lesson plan character setWe also pilot our materials in real classrooms around the country to get feedback from the frontline on how they work in practice. This helps us to refine our lesson materials, ensuring they meet the needs of teachers and pupils in different contexts.

Our lesson plans are easy for teachers to find and use. And we’re on hand five days a week all year round to offer additional guidance and advice to members should you need it.

Progress over profit

In addition to our role as the official body and subject association for PSHE education, we’re also a registered charity. That means — unlike other commercial outfits — we reinvest all our earnings back into creating new and improved resources, drawing on insights from our members and our involvement in the wider policy landscape.

Our members are our only shareholders.

PSHE Association members pay a yearly flat fee for guaranteed access to all our latest and greatest lesson plans, with no hidden fees or additional charges.

And even though we offer a comprehensive range of ready-made, ready-to-go lesson plans, we’ll always champion the role of teaching professionals in both planning their own lessons and bringing our lesson plans to life. We have a range of guidance and tools to support this process, including our updated guidance on how to plan and choose great lessons.
