‘Inside the Mind of a 16-Year-Old': Peter Hyman and Shuab Gamote present findings from their groundbreaking Demos study

Peter Hyman and Shuab Gamote are the co-authors of Inside the Mind of a 16-Year-Old, a nationally recognised study of young people’s identity, media worlds and political attitudes, published by renowned UK think-tank Demos. Their research includes in-depth interviews with 16-year-olds, capturing the facts about how young people navigate the intersection between social media and the political landscape today.

Peter and Shuab’s keynote will share key findings from their research and we will explore why these insights matter for PSHE education and how it can support children and young people’s lives and futures, including helping them to navigate a rapidly changing world and the real-life challenges they face.

Peter Hyman is a British political strategist, educator and writer. A former adviser and speechwriter to Prime Minister Tony Blair (1997–2003), he later served as Senior Advisor to Sir Keir Starmer (2022-24). Peter designed, built and co-founded a new primary school, School 360, as well as co-founded Voice 21, a charity which works in more than 1000 schools across England, developing oracy in young people.

Shuab Gamote is a researcher and advisor focused on young people, political engagement and public-service reform. He was a Political Leadership Scholar at the Blavatnik School of Government and sits on Alan Milburn’s national commission on rising NEET rates. Shuab is a member of the Strategic Advisory Group for the Centre for Digital Information Literacy in Schools (CDILS), a new initiative of the National Institute of Teaching.
