Smoking, Drink & Drug Use among Young People in England

Written by PSHE Association | Jul 15, 2025 9:45:34 AM

We are partnering with NHS England and Ipsos to invite your school to take part in the Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use (SDD) among Young People in England survey 2025 this autumn.

This survey is the main source of information on young people’s smoking, vaping, drinking and drug use behaviours. It is therefore invaluable for developing effective PSHE education strategies to address these challenges.

The first lesson plan — participating in research — has been revised and explains the concept of informed consent and how it protects people. It also explores how data is collected, stored and used (a statutory RSHE requirement) as well as the potential benefits and drawbacks to participating in research. This lesson will support your students to evaluate any research opportunities that arise in their lives, not just the SDD survey, and is now available to download.

Schools that take part this autumn will also receive:

  • A second follow-up lesson plan. This is a new PSHE Association lesson plan exploring influence, which covers in-person and online peer influence, vaping, and wellbeing. The lesson plan will support students to manage a range of influences on drug, alcohol and tobacco use, including peer and online peers.
  • A personalised school report showing how your school’s data compares against national averages. Click here to see an example personalised school report from SDD 2023.

Findings from the survey are completely confidential: no-one will be able to identify which schools or pupils have taken part in the study from the data.

How do I get involved in SDD 2025?

Register your interest now and read more about the survey on the study website.

Once you’ve registered your school, the Ipsos research team will be in touch in September 2025 with instructions on how to take part.
