Addressing ongoing concerns around meningitis and meningococcal disease

Written by PSHE Association | Mar 19, 2026 4:59:42 PM

As you may have seen, meningitis and meningococcal disease have been in the news following the recent outbreak in Kent.

The Health Secretary told the BBC that “the general risk is low, even if the disease itself is extremely serious", but we realise there is heightened awareness and concern at this point.

And although PSHE education should be a planned programme rather than reactive, we wanted to reshare free lessons on the topic that you can build into your programme.

Developed in partnership with Meningitis Now and Professor Sue Astley Theodossiadis from the University of Manchester, Personal health and illness prevention will support KS5/post-16 students to develop independence in relation to their health, recognise serious illness and seek urgent medical care if/when it is needed.

Download the free lesson pack to access the lesson plan, slides, student resources and accompanying teacher guidance.

If you are not a member of the PSHE Association, you may be asked to create a free account in order to start the download.
